Itaú buys AI startup NeoSpace for $580M in all-cash deal

What's the deal? Itaú Unibanco, Brazil's largest bank by assets, has agreed to acquire 100% of NeoSpace AI, a Brazilian generative AI startup, for 2.9 billion reais (about $580 million) in cash. The all-cash transaction was announced on October 26, 2026.

Why now? The deal formalises a relationship that began in January 2025, when Itaú led an $18 million round for a 15% stake, valuing NeoSpace at $100 million. The two have since built AI applications for financial services together.

What does NeoSpace do? Founded in 2023, the startup develops foundational AI models, including what it calls a Large Data Model that analyses varied data types and formats. It already serves clients in telecoms and aviation and is expanding into the US and Europe.

What's the endgame? Itaú says the acquisition will help it build its own AI models by combining NeoSpace's technology with the bank's financial-services expertise. The purchase supports a broader push to bring generative AI into customer-facing banking, following the launch of its ia.i conversational platform.

NeoSpace will keep operating independently, with founder Bruno Pierobon remaining chief executive officer.

What could go wrong? The deal still requires regulatory approval. Its payoff depends on whether NeoSpace's models improve Itaú's products and operations at scale.

The signal: At $580 million, the acquisition marks a sharp escalation from minority stake to full ownership. Brazilian banks are investing heavily in technology, with Itaú and Nubank cited as regional leaders in AI maturity — making the deal part of a competitive race to build differentiated digital services.
