RedotPay buys licensed BTCBOX to enter Japan, halts non-compliant service
What's the deal? Crypto payments firm RedotPay has acquired BTCBOXDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Japan-licensed crypto asset exchange, for an undisclosed sum, the company said on October 24. It plans to offer regulation-compliant services in Japan through BTCBOX.
Why now? RedotPay does not hold a Japanese crypto asset exchange licence. It acknowledged that its existing services for Japanese residents did not meet local rules and said it will restrict them in stages before shutting them down.
The firm has already suspended new user registrations in Japan and pulled its app from the local Apple and Google stores. RedotPay said it will provide BTCBOX with financial and technical support.
The target: Founded in 2014, BTCBOX received its Japanese exchange licence in September 2017. It suspended all services in January 2026 after a customer data leak, then began a phased restoration on August 3 following security upgrades and passkey authentication.
What's the endgame? The deal buys RedotPay a compliant foothold in Japan, where local registration is the key gate to operating. Japan's Financial Services Agency listed 27 registered crypto asset exchange providers as of September 2026.
What could go wrong? This is not a clean launch. BTCBOX had only recently resumed service after the breach, and the companies disclosed no deal terms or timetable for a new RedotPay-branded offering.
The signal: Buying a licensed exchange is a well-worn route into Japan — Binance entered by acquiring Sakura Exchange BitCoinDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in 2022. RedotPay's move shows regulation increasingly drives crypto market entry, with acquisition faster than building a licence from scratch.
