Japan Storage Battery and SBI launch merchant grid-battery fund

What's the deal? Japan Storage BatteryDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and SBI Smart Energy have formed the Grid-scale Battery Storage Business Fund, pooling seven high-voltage grid storage sites spread across Japan. The partners announced the vehicle on October 19, 2026, but did not disclose its size.

How it works: The fund uses non-recourse project finance to raise capital and acquire storage facilities. It targets revenue from Japan's balancing, wholesale-power, and capacity markets — a merchant model where returns ride on market prices rather than fixed contracts.

Who does what? Japan Storage Battery handles development and maintenance of each site, while RS Asset Advisors manages the assets. All seven sites are due to begin commercial operation during FY2026.

What's the endgame? Japan Storage Battery plans to reuse the business and financing model to build a nationwide portfolio of grid storage. It also aims to expand a capital-recycling model through project finance and further fund formation, creating new investment opportunities in the asset class.

Why now? Japan's grid needs flexible capacity to absorb growing renewable output, and financing structures for battery storage are only starting to take shape. SBI Money PlazaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → launched a storage-focused fund in July, and recent deals include RENOVADealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s roughly US$55.4M financing for a 99.9MW facility and a SumitomoDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →-backed 62MW project.

The signal: The notable part is less the undisclosed fund size than that lenders are beginning to finance portfolios of merchant battery assets. It is a meaningful sign of new financing models forming — but not yet proof that merchant battery economics are settled.
