Blackstone backs $18B debt deal for Anthropic's AI chips

What's the deal? Anthropic has secured an $18 billion debt financing package backed by Blackstone, tied to AI chips and computing infrastructure. Blackstone is committing $9 billion to a junior-debt tranche within the deal, which forms part of a broader $60 billion arrangement.

Why now? Technology companies face huge capital requirements to expand computing capacity, and Blackstone sees that gap as an opening for private credit. "The needs of capital here are so enormous. It's unprecedented in our lifetimes," President Jon Gray said on the firm's third-quarter earnings call.

By the numbers: The $18 billion deal ranks in the 99th percentile of all US deep-tech debt rounds on record. It is not Blackstone's first Anthropic bet: in June, its Credit & Insurance arm joined a $35 billion financing launched by Apollo and Broadcom to support the company's AI computing capacity.

What's the endgame? Blackstone is financing the AI supply chain through loans secured against long-term contracts with major tech companies. It structures chip deals on a junior basis with model companies, or on a senior basis backed by hyperscalers and chip makers. The firm is also weighing dedicated vehicles focused on chip financing.

What could go wrong? Investors are scrutinising the capital needs and valuations behind the AI buildout. Gray said Blackstone is focusing on physical infrastructure and long-term contracted assets to manage risks, including potential technological obsolescence.

Zoom out: About 7% of Blackstone's $1.4 trillion in assets under management is now exposed to AI infrastructure across debt and equity. Beyond chips, the firm is also financing utilities, pipelines, liquefied natural gas businesses, renewable developers, and data centres.

The signal: The scale of the AI buildout is pulling private credit giants into infrastructure finance at unprecedented size. Blackstone is betting that tighter capital availability will favour established investors with the scale to fund the largest projects — positioning itself across energy, computing, and financing at once.
