GEM closes $685M second independent sponsors fund, 52% above its debut

What's the deal? Global Endowment ManagementDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has held the final close of GEM Independent Sponsors Fund II, LP at its hard cap of $685 million. The Charlotte-based firm raised the private equity fund from foundations, healthcare institutions, insurance companies, university endowments, and clients of its affiliated outsourced chief investment officer business.

Why now? The close extends a program GEM has run for more than a decade, during which it has evaluated more than 1,200 opportunities and completed 87 investments alongside more than 30 sponsors. Fund II is about 52% larger than GEM's inaugural $450 million independent sponsors fund, which closed in 2025.

What's the endgame? The fund invests alongside independent sponsors — private equity teams that source and execute lower-middle-market acquisitions deal by deal, without a committed fund. Several sponsors GEM has backed have since raised their own committed funds, letting the firm identify emerging managers early and support them as they grow.

Who's quoted? "The independent sponsor market has evolved from a niche segment of private equity into an increasingly important source of lower middle market exposure," said Jay Ripley, head of investments at GEM.

Harris Williams acted as exclusive placement agent, and Ropes & GrayDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → served as legal counsel on the fund's formation. The raise follows GEM's August close of its inaugural GEM Seed & Micro Venture Fund at $82 million, above its $80 million hard cap.

The signal: The close lands in a subdued 2026 fundraising market where capital has concentrated among established managers and emerging managers have struggled. Middle-market deal activity has held up better than large deals, and GEM's oversubscribed raise is a vote of confidence in its specialist platform — though it is not evidence of a broad recovery.
