Amkor deepens NVIDIA ties with $3B AI packaging push across Korea, Arizona
What's the deal? Amkor Technology said on October 21 that it will invest a further $1.3 billion to expand advanced packaging capacity in South Korea, bringing its multi-year commitments with NVIDIA across Korea and Arizona to $3 billion. The outsourced packaging and test specialist aims to more than quadruple its advanced-packaging capacity in Korea by the end of 2028.
What does Amkor do? It runs semiconductor packaging and test operations across the US, Japan, Europe, and Asia Pacific. Advanced packaging — stacking and connecting multiple chips to boost performance and efficiency — has become central to AI chip design as shrinking circuitry hits physical limits.
Why now? NVIDIA is racing to secure supply for its AI and accelerated computing platforms. "Demand is extraordinary. Capacity is the constraint," said Jensen Huang, NVIDIA's chief executive officer.
The numbers behind it: Amkor posted record second-quarter revenue of $1.9 billion, up 26% year over year, with earnings up 82.9% over the past year. It plans capital spending of $2.5–3 billion in 2026.
What's the endgame? The NVIDIA commitments anchor factory loading with concrete customer demand, easing the underutilization risk that comes with heavy spending. Amkor also expanded its Arizona campus plan to roughly $12 billion after commitments exceeded the first phase's cleanroom capacity.
What could go wrong? The build-out is capital-intensive, and returns depend on finishing the facilities and keeping new lines busy. If AI programs do not ramp quickly, higher fixed costs and rising depreciation could pressure margins.
The signal: Amkor's investment reflects where the AI supply chain is heading — packaging is now a bottleneck, not an afterthought. One research firm projects the advanced-packaging market will grow from about $55 billion in 2025 to more than $120 billion by 2031.
