G+D Ventures backs Hamburg's Impossible Cloud in European sovereign-cloud push

What's the deal? G+D Ventures, the venture arm of German security firm Giesecke+DevrientDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, has invested in Impossible Cloud, a Hamburg-based provider of sovereign cloud and AI infrastructure. The company offers a European alternative to non-European hyperscalers, combining cloud storage with GPU computing power. Neither side disclosed the amount.

What does it do? Founded in 2021, Impossible Cloud pools existing capacity from certified European data centres onto a single platform, rather than building its own facilities at each location. Its services include S3-compatible object storage, dedicated NVIDIA GPU servers, and managed inference for open-weight AI models, all run in ISO 27001-certified European data centres.

By the numbers: Impossible Cloud says more than 4,000 businesses use its platform directly or through IT resellers and partners. It plans to use the capital to expand its technology platform and market presence.

Why it matters? For G+D Ventures, the draw is rising demand for cloud and AI infrastructure that meets European data-protection and security rules. Regulated firms such as banks and insurers increasingly want legal and operational control over the infrastructure they use, not just data location.

What they're saying: "Digital sovereignty starts with infrastructure," said Andreas Barthelmes, principal at G+D Ventures. Co-founder and chief executive officer Kai Wawrzinek said the deal also brings "access to a unique network of technology and security experts."

Context: The investment fits a broader push to build European-controlled cloud and AI capacity. In April 2026, the European Commission awarded sovereign-cloud contracts worth up to €180 million to European-led providers including OVHcloud, STACKITDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and Scaleway, while US hyperscalers invest heavily in the region. Smaller players are also raising capital, including Finnish AI-cloud provider Verda, which raised $117 million in April, and French startup Granite, which raised €4 million in September.

The signal: G+D Ventures has invested in security and digital-trust startups since 2018, backing a €50 million vehicle for European TrustTech startups with the European Investment Bank. With the amount undisclosed, this deal reads less as a landmark financing than as a vote of confidence in the sovereign-cloud trend — and in the security angle Giesecke+Devrient brings to it.
