Hanwha opens Impulse Space's $5.4B valuation to Korean institutions

What's the deal? Hanwha Asset ManagementDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has set up the Impulse Space Project Fund, a venture capital vehicle backed by four South Korean institutions, to invest in US space company Impulse Space. The firm did not disclose the fund's size.

Why now? The fund gives the four Korean institutions a route into Impulse's Series D1. Impulse raised $500 million in June and another $308 million in September, lifting its Series D to $808 million. Reuters reported the extension valued the company at about $5.4 billion.

The track record: This extends Hanwha's reported run of Impulse investments to four consecutive rounds since the Series B. Hanwha Asset Management's US venture arm lists Impulse among a portfolio that also includes OpenAI, Mistral AI, and Varda Space Industries.

What's the endgame? Impulse builds in-space transportation, or "space tugs," that move satellites between orbits. It says the new capital will fund product development and team growth, drawing on a growing commercial and government contract backlog.

What could go wrong? Space infrastructure is capital-intensive and slow to generate returns. The key test for Impulse is whether it can scale operations and convert that backlog into revenue.

The signal: The headline here is less Hanwha's undisclosed fund size than the broader story — sustained investor appetite for space infrastructure, and Hanwha's effort to channel that exposure to Korean institutional money.
