Swedfund backs $600M India climate fund with $35M commitment

What's the deal? Swedish development finance institution Swedfund has committed $35 million to South Asia Growth Fund IV, a private equity fund targeting growth-stage Indian companies working on emissions reduction and climate resilience. The fund, managed by GEF Capital PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, is targeting $600 million.

Where's the money going? The fund focuses on renewable energy, water management, and sustainable agriculture. It aims to provide long-term growth capital to companies developing low-carbon products and improving resource efficiency.

Why now? India is among the world's fastest-growing economies, but faces rising energy demand, water stress, and increasing exposure to extreme weather. Meeting its climate goals will require substantial private sector investment.

"India's transition to a more sustainable and climate-resilient economy requires significant investment in innovative businesses that can deliver solutions at scale," said Gunilla Nilsson, investment director and head of energy and climate at Swedfund.

By the numbers: Swedfund's commitment is one cornerstone of an expected first close that also involves other development finance institutions and private investors; it is not the fund's total raise. GEF Capital's previous South Asia funds grew from about $193 million to roughly $440 million, giving this vehicle a larger target and an established platform.

The backstory: Swedfund has an established relationship with GEF Capital, which has focused on environmental and resource-efficiency sectors since 2018 and runs a team in Mumbai. Swedfund previously backed South Asia Growth Fund II and III, and co-invested in Arya.ag in 2025.

The signal: The deal fits Swedfund's recent pattern of backing climate-focused funds, including a $20 million commitment to Africa's Helios CLEAR Fund. It channels growth capital to Indian businesses in renewables, water security, and sustainable agriculture — though the report does not identify portfolio companies or how much of the $600 million target has been raised.
