Robinhood's RVI fund buys $30M stake in crypto-friendly Erebor Bank
What's the deal? Robinhood Ventures Fund I (NYSE: RVI) has purchased $30 million of preferred stock in Erebor Bank, a nationally chartered US lender, the fund announced on October 21.
What does Erebor do? Founded in 2025 by Palmer Luckey, Owen Rapaport, Jacob Hirshman, Aaron Pelz, and Trevor Capozza, Erebor serves the innovation economy — defense, robotics, AI, hard tech, and crypto. It offers blockchain-enabled payments, crypto-backed loans, and financing for AI infrastructure.
Why now? Erebor has shifted from a proposed entrant to an operating bank. It received its full OCC national charter and FDIC insurance in February 2026 and has since grown deposits above $7 billion.
What's the endgame? For Robinhood, the stake marks an expansion beyond RVI's better-known technology and consumer-platform holdings into financial infrastructure. The closed-end fund, which began trading on the NYSE in March 2026, gives retail investors exposure to a concentrated portfolio of mostly private companies.
"I believe the banking sector is ripe for innovation, and that the team at Erebor is positioned to disrupt the status quo," said Sarah Pinto, president of Robinhood Ventures Fund I. Erebor, which is backed by Valor Equity Partners, Lux Capital, and 8VC, counts the deal as a vote of confidence from RVI's retail investors.
What could go wrong? Erebor enters a crowded field of banks serving crypto and payments firms, including Cross River, Customers BankDealroom has a profile for this one. The signal: The purchase reflects competition for banking relationships in the digital-asset economy rather than an isolated bet on crypto, and signals Robinhood's growing interest in financial infrastructure.
