Nithio launches $150M debt fund for African e-mobility fleets
What's the deal? Climate fintech Nithio has launched the Fund for Utility and E-mobility Lending (FUEL), targeting $150 million to finance electric fleets, charging stations, and battery-swapping networks across Sub-Saharan Africa. The fund will issue senior secured loans of $2 million to $15 million across 19 markets.
Why now? Electric fleets and battery-swapping networks need heavy capital for vehicles and infrastructure. Asset-backed debt lets operators scale without diluting equity — a financing gap FUEL aims to fill.
What's the endgame? Nithio wants to give commercial EV and charging businesses non-dilutive capital to expand physical operations over the next three to five years. It assesses credit risk through an AI analytics platform trained on more than 100 million payment records across its target markets.
What could go wrong? FUEL is a fundraising plan, not money already in hand. Nithio is targeting a $100 million first close in 2027, and the fund's impact depends on attracting investors and lending beyond a handful of larger, established borrowers.
The signal: Lender interest in African e-mobility is building. Spiro secured $50 million in debt in February from AfreximbankDealroom has a profile for this one.
