Pantheon beats target with $6B secondaries fund

What's the deal? Pantheon has raised $6 billion for its latest private equity secondaries fund, its largest such haul to date. The capital far surpassed the firm's $3.5 billion target and is almost double the prior fund, which closed in 2023.

Where's the money going? Pantheon will use the fund to back secondaries deals led by both fund investors and asset managers, with a focus on the middle market.

Why now? Private equity secondaries are expanding sharply as investors and managers turn to portfolio sales and continuation vehicles for liquidity while conventional exits remain constrained. Secondaries fundraising topped $50 billion in the first half of 2026, according to data cited by With Intelligence, while Evercore reported a record $121 billion in deal volume for the period.

What's the context? Pantheon's haul marks a big step up from its $3.25 billion flagship secondaries close in 2023. Still, it trails the largest recent peers: CollerDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Partners Group raised $17 billion and $9 billion, respectively.

The signal: Secondaries have become a central tool for freeing up cash in private equity. Pantheon's ability to attract substantially more capital shows both the strategy's growing role and the mounting pressure on firms to compete in an increasingly large-fund market.
