Toyota Tsusho backs US chip-polishing startup ChEmpower in convertible deal

What's the deal? Toyota TsushoDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has invested in ChEmpower, a US startup developing chemical materials for chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) in semiconductor manufacturing. The deal takes the form of a convertible agreement (SAFE); the amount was not disclosed.

What does ChEmpower do? It develops abrasive-free CMP chemicals and polishing pads using proprietary chemical technology. By removing abrasive particles, the approach aims to prevent scratches on silicon wafers, improve yields, and make it easier to recycle water and rare metals from waste liquids.

What's the endgame? Toyota Tsusho plans to supply ChEmpower's products to chipmakers in Japan and link them to a business that collects semiconductor waste liquids and recycles rare metals. It wants to build an ecosystem for "green semiconductors," the company said.

Why now? AI data center expansion and more complex chips are driving semiconductor demand — and the volume of abrasive particles and ultrapure water consumed in CMP. The investment follows ChEmpower's $18.7 million Series A in April 2025, backed by M VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. What could go wrong? Commercial impact hinges on customer qualification and adoption, a slow process in the chip industry. A no-amount convertible also leaves the scale of Toyota Tsusho's commitment unclear.

The signal: The round reflects rising strategic interest in CMP materials as chips grow more complex — FujifilmDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → announced an $18 million US expansion of CMP-slurry production in October 2026. Toyota Tsusho's angle ties that demand to resource recovery, positioning sustainability as a selling point in semiconductor supply chains.
