Founded in Mariehamn on the Åland Islands, Carus serves around 30 operators across four continents and will stay standalone under founder Anders Rundberg as chief executive officer.
What does Carus do? Its software runs the operational core of a ferry business: booking, ticketing, capacity management, check-in, boarding, port automation, and onboard sales. Every crossing must reconcile passengers, vehicles, and freight against a vessel's capacity. Carus is the largest vendor by customer count in ferry reservation and departure control.
Why now? After eight years inside the Winpos Group, Carus sought a long-term owner. Rundberg and chairman Oscar Stenberg began the search while still running the business.
What's the endgame? Banyan runs a buy-and-hold model across more than 130 portfolio companies and plans to back further product development to extend Carus's position with operators worldwide.
"I wanted a permanent partner rather than one arriving with a generic plan, and speaking with founders and CEOs at other Banyan companies gave me the confidence that this was the right home for Carus and the team," Rundberg said.
