Allianz Partners buys nib Travel Insurance, bets on travel advisors

What's the deal? Allianz PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired nib Travel InsuranceDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, with plans to co-design future products, technology and purchase pathways with travel advisors. The deal value was undisclosed. Dylan Wilkinson, head of travel and tourism at nib Travel Insurance, says existing systems and products stay in place for now.

Why now? The acquisition marks Allianz Partners' return to a channel Wilkinson says still represents about 30% of the travel insurance market. "Allianz is re-entering a channel that represents still about 30% of the travel insurance market. So I think number one, that's a real signal of confidence in agents," he says.

What's the endgame? Allianz Partners intends to involve agents in designing next-generation products and customer experiences before introducing new systems. "We want to make sure that we're engaging the agent community and getting their feedback on what they need," Wilkinson says. He identifies global claims expertise, innovation and embedded insurance within booking pathways as areas that could support the trade.

Why advisors? Wilkinson says travel has grown more complex since COVID, with geopolitical tensions and climate events adding to the challenges advisors navigate. That, he says, is why "people are relying on travel agents more and more," and why Allianz Partners is "doubling down on advisor-led travel."

What could go wrong? The challenge will be translating confidence into tangible improvements in products, systems and support, rather than simply preserving existing relationships. The timing and scope of future developments remain undecided.

Continuity: The existing partnership team has moved to Allianz Partners, keeping the relationships and knowledge agents rely on. "Anyone who interacted with us before the transition will interact with us in the same way that they did previously," Wilkinson says. The plan is to combine Allianz Partners' global scale with the local expertise that built nib's position in Australia.

The signal: The deal reflects renewed confidence in human advisors as travel grows more complex. Allianz Partners' longer-term ambition, Wilkinson says, is clear: "We want to be the industry provider of choice, unashamedly."
