Amazon to pour $18B into Germany in 2027 to grow AI, cloud and satellites
What's the deal? Amazon plans to invest more than €16 billion ($18 billion) in Germany in 2027, expanding data centres, AI infrastructure, logistics, satellite internet, and Prime Video productions. It announced the plan on October 20 at the Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin.
Where the money goes: €4.8 billion will expand Amazon Web Services' Frankfurt cloud region and AI infrastructure. The rest funds new logistics projects expected to create more than 3,000 jobs, the Amazon Leo satellite broadband network, and a second robotics and AI research lab in Berlin.
Why now? The commitment lands as demand for AI services climbs and tech firms race to build cloud capacity across Europe. Germany, Europe's largest economy, is courting high-tech investment to revive growth.
What's the endgame? "We want German businesses, communities, and creators to have the infrastructure and tools they need to compete and grow," said David Zapolsky, Amazon's chief global affairs and legal officer. The package builds on a €10 billion commitment from June 2024, of which €8.8 billion was earmarked for AWSDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → data centres.
