Allianz European Credit will supply a portfolio of general, health, and life insurance — including protection, savings, and investment products — distributed through NBG's physical and digital channels. Allianz handles product development and underwriting; NBG manages customer service and communication.
What's the endgame? NBG aims to quadruple income from insurance activities, "leveraging an integrated and competitive product portfolio, as well as the know-how and advanced digital capabilities of Allianz," its management said. The commercial agreement runs an initial 10 years, with an automatic five-year extension.
The numbers: The earn-out partnership should lift return on tangible equity by more than 50 basis points and boost earnings per share by 4%. The hit to the bank's capital is estimated at 20 basis points.
The signal: By taking a minority stake rather than owning an insurer outright, NBG is opting for a "capital-light" model of cooperation with a large international player. It called Allianz an "ideal partner" for a "scalable, modern bancassurance model" — a sign that European banks increasingly prefer distribution deals over full insurance ownership.
