Founded in July 2023, Beff is led by co-chief executive officers Yukihiro Nagano and Shunsuke Amagai.
What's the endgame? Beff sells a platform for battery development and mass production. Its software, Beff Navigator, uses a proprietary analysis model to integrate material data, designs, test conditions, and measurement results, digitising the path from development to production verification.
The product: Beff has also launched a battery manufacturing core system that merges its Virtual Factory Platform (VFP) and Real Factory Platform (RFP). Using parameters such as production conditions and inspection results, it aims to digitise person-dependent processes, catch problems early, and improve production yields.
Why now? The battery industry has long been dominated by Asian players competing on mass production and low cost. Economic security concerns and technology diversification are pushing the market toward high-efficiency local production and domestic supply chains.
What could go wrong? New battery makers struggle with yield improvement and large volumes of scrap waste. Much of the manufacturing know-how remains tied to individuals, and skilled engineers are scarce. Beff is betting it can solve this by digitising accumulated know-how and dispatching Japan's battery manufacturing specialists.
The backer: Sumisho Venture Partners launched in Tokyo in 2022, adding to Sumitomo Corporation's global CVC network that began in Silicon Valley in 1998. The firm says it invested because it connected with Beff's vision to "pass on the tacit knowledge of the field to the next generation through data" (translated from Japanese). It plans to support Beff's global push through Sumitomo Corporation group ties.
The signal: As governments prioritise local battery supply chains, the bottleneck is shifting from capital to expertise. Beff's approach — codifying factory-floor knowledge as software — reflects a wider move to treat manufacturing know-how itself as a scalable product.
