Balaji's Network School buys Farcaster, rebrands it Network State Protocol

What's the deal? Network SchoolDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the initiative led by former Coinbase chief technology officer Balaji Srinivasan, is acquiring decentralised social platform Farcaster from Neynar. The company announced the deal on October 15, 2026; terms were not disclosed.

Why now? This is Farcaster's second ownership change in roughly nine months. On January 21, 2026, Neynar bought the platform from Merkle Manufactory — a deal that included the protocol, its official client, and AI token launchpad ClankerDealroom has a profile for this one. What's the endgame? Farcaster will be rebranded as the Network State Protocol, with a new rulebook built around AI moderation and proof of humanity. Network School wants to cultivate techno-optimists building digital societies that could eventually become physical network states.

What changes? The underlying protocol stays open and permissionless, but the main client moves to a moderated environment. It adds three features: AI moderation to help police posts, proof-of-humanity checks to curb bots and fake accounts, and a "social smart contract" modelled on Singapore's standards of public conduct.

Existing users aren't simply switched over. They are being asked to vote on the new operational models, and those who opt in receive an onchain NFT reflecting support for the new governance rules.

What could go wrong? Farcaster has struggled to sustain user growth, despite raising $150 million in 2024 from investors including Paradigm and a16z cryptoDealroom has a profile for this one. The signal: The deal folds a crypto-native social network into Srinivasan's broader bet on "network states." Network School, which relocated to Kazakhstan earlier in 2026 after challenges in Malaysia and recently raised funds at a $2 billion valuation, is now trying to turn an online community into the foundation for real-world ones.
