Gartner: over 80% of neoclouds may cease independent operations by 2030 as $3.5T of AI infra faces impairment risk

What's going on? Gartner said on 14 October that if AI providers keep their current capital-spending pace, more than $3.5 trillion of AI infrastructure spending could be exposed to impairment by the end of 2030 — and that by then cost pressure and thin differentiation will force over 80% of "neocloud" providers to cease independent operations.

The maths: Gartner expects nearly $1 trillion of AI-infrastructure spend in 2026 and another $6 trillion from 2027 to 2030. Covering that build-out plus financing and a 12% return on invested capital would require about $8.5 trillion of cumulative revenue through 2030, the firm says; it forecasts no more than $3.6 trillion of enterprise and consumer AI revenue attributable to AI data centres in the same period. AI-optimised IaaS spending is projected to rise from $66 billion in 2027 to $174 billion in 2030 — "too low for most AI compute providers to recover their AI investments before the current generation of AI semiconductors is replaced," per analyst Will Sommer.

Who is exposed: Gartner contrasts diversified hyperscalers with neoclouds that must soon earn returns on AI-optimised IaaS. Named names in market coverage of the note include CoreWeave and Nebius; Investor's Business Daily reported CoreWeave and peers sold off after the release. Separately, Nebius shares had already been under pressure on rate and debt fears.

Why it matters: It is one of the starkest public forecasts yet that the AI-compute landlord boom could end in consolidation and write-downs — a narrative signal for Dealroom's neocloud, GPU-cloud and AI-infrastructure coverage, not a closed round or exit.

Caveat: This is a research forecast, not a company filing. Gartner is modelling a continued investment trajectory and a hurdle rate; outcomes depend on demand, pricing, power and whether hyperscalers absorb capacity. An August 2026 Gartner research note still framed CoreWeave as a leading neocloud competitor — the October release is about sector economics, not a single-issuer downgrade.
