Hyundai to invest $15.5B in India, with 20% going to AI and startups

What's the deal? Hyundai Motor GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → will invest about $15.5 billion (US$17.6B) in India over seven years starting this year, Chairman Chung Euisun announced after meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 13. Roughly 60% will go to upgrading and expanding production facilities, and 20% to AI, venture investment, and local startups.

What's the endgame? Hyundai wants to build out India as a manufacturing and research base, with deeper local supply chains. Chung said the group will localise components including batteries and strengthen India-specific R&D and driving tests.

Why now? The pledge coincided with the inauguration of Hyundai's new Pune plant. "India still lacks significant infrastructure, so we need to collaborate with various companies, particularly with local Indian firms," Chung said.

What's changing? Affiliates KiaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Hyundai GlovisDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and Hyundai TransysDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → will join the investment, according to Vice Chairman Chang Jae-hoon. The group plans to set up a dedicated vehicle, "HMG IndiaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →," to handle investment, government relations, and promotion.

What could go wrong? Hyundai's electric vehicle push faces a slow build-out. Chung said charging infrastructure remains insufficient and that scaling it with government support "cannot be done overnight," estimating it will take about five more years.

The signal: By pairing factory spending with AI and startup bets, Hyundai is treating India as more than an assembly hub — positioning the country as a long-term growth and innovation market for the group.
