3M puts $150M into Genius Electronic Optical for AI data centre optics
What's the deal? Taiwan's Genius Electronic OpticalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (3406) will raise $150 million (around US$139.2M) through a private placement subscribed by 3M. The US group will buy 5,534,440 new common shares at US$25.2 each, giving it roughly 4.68% of the company once customary closing conditions are met.
Why now? The two companies announced a strategic partnership to jointly develop, manufacture, and expand capacity for optical communications solutions. The placement funds that push into high-speed optical communications, AI data centres, and high-performance computing.
What's the endgame? Genius Electronic Optical plans to use the money for working capital, repaying bank loans, and other future development needs, which it says will lift operating efficiency and strengthen its balance sheet.
The optics race: Unlike rival LarganDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, which is targeting full fibre array unit (FAU) assembly, Genius Electronic Optical is focusing on high-precision optical components inside the module — including precision prisms, V-grooves, and MT ferrules.
European analysts say the company's co-packaged optics (CPO) work could qualify it as a leading FAU module supplier for Nvidia's CPO programme. They expect it to be a key module supplier for Nvidia's second-half 2027 plan, targeting a market share above 50%.
The signal: At $150 million, the deal sits in the top 4% of private placement non-VC rounds over the past 48 months. The size of the cheque — and 3M's direct stake — signals how hard established players are racing to lock in supply for the optics that will wire AI data centres.
