GSK to invest $800M in Pennsylvania, adding 300 jobs
What's the deal? Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro announced that biopharmaceutical company GSK will invest over $800 million to expand operations in the state. The move will create more than 300 new jobs over five years and retain roughly 4,500 existing full-time positions.
What's the endgame? GSK plans to expand its facility in Upper Merion Township into a biopharmaceutical innovation and manufacturing hub, integrating commercial production, research, and advanced digital capabilities. Construction is slated to begin in 2027.
The project involves demolishing existing buildings and constructing new and upgraded facilities. These include a commercial-scale biologics production site for clinical and commercial supply, an R&D pilot plant to accelerate technology transfer and process development, and a centralised quality control lab and manufacturing science and technology (MSAT) centre.
Why now? This marks GSK's second major Pennsylvania expansion under Shapiro, bringing its total investment in the state to nearly $1.7 billion. In October 2024, the company announced an $800 million plant expansion in Lancaster County, creating at least 200 high-paying jobs and set to double the site's capacity.
GSK is a global biopharmaceutical company headquartered in London, with its US base in Philadelphia. The company qualifies for tax incentives under Pennsylvania's Qualified Manufacturing Innovation and Reinvestment Deduction and Manufacturing Tax Credit programmes.
The signal: The repeated commitments underscore Pennsylvania's push to anchor its life sciences industry, using targeted tax incentives to keep large-scale pharmaceutical manufacturing and research within the state.
