Try Dealroom → ecosystem, has launched the Sycomore European Strategic Sovereignty fund, an equity vehicle investing in European companies that drive the region's industrial autonomy. The fund targets businesses across all market capitalisations, with a focus on France, Italy, and Germany. Its size was not disclosed.
What's the endgame? More than half of the portfolio is expected to go into companies with a market cap below €20 billion. The fund covers themes including digital transformation — spanning artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and data centres — energy independence, critical infrastructure, critical materials, industrial value chains, and security.
What could go wrong? Security and defence companies are among the holdings, a sensitive area for European investors. Sycomore says it evaluates these under strict criteria covering human rights, governance, sales traceability, and controversy management, and will apply its exclusion policy on controversial weapons.
Hugo Mas and Alban Préaubert, both specialists in European small- and mid-cap stocks, manage the fund with support from Sycomore's investment platform.
The signal: The launch reflects a growing push among European asset managers to back the continent's drive for strategic independence across technology, energy, and defence. By tilting toward smaller companies, Sycomore is positioning sovereignty as a long-term equity theme rather than a short-term bet.
