Jinjiang buys out Vienna Hotels founder for final 10% in $121M deal

Why now? The purchase closes a decade-long exit that began in April 2016, when Huang sold 80% of Vienna Hotels for US$240.5M. Jinjiang bought a further 10% in June 2022 for US$30.1M, and this final tranche ends the 65-year-old founder's 32-year run with the brand he created.

Across the three deals, Jinjiang paid a combined US$381.8M. The valuation tells its own story: the stake Jinjiang bought in 2022 implied a US$300.6M company value — unchanged from 2016 — while the latest 10% implies US$1.11B, a 3.7-fold jump in four years.

What's the endgame? Vienna has delivered scale. From 303 open hotels in 2016, the group topped 3,800 across four sub-brands by mid-2026, with 2025 revenue of US$479.2M and net profit of US$74.9M — among the most profitable assets in China's mid-market segment.

What could go wrong? The balance sheet is thin. As of June 30, 2026, Vienna held US$528.6M in assets against US$504.1M in liabilities, leaving net assets of US$65.7M and a debt-to-asset ratio near 87.6% — higher than Jinjiang's roughly 63% and HuawuDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s roughly 85%.

For an asset-light manager that owns no property, much of that debt is "other people's money": franchise deposits, prepaid fees, and unpaid supply-chain bills. Huang built the model that way from the start, once saying, "if we must call it financing, we financed from suppliers." The structure works while stores grow — but industry data shows about 30,000 accommodation businesses deregistered in the first half of 2026, roughly one closure every nine minutes, concentrated in economy and mid-range hotels.

The signal: Jinjiang is paying US$1.11B of implied value for franchise income, not real estate. The deal caps a consolidation wave that has absorbed China's independent mid-market brands — Jinjiang earlier took LouvreDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → was privatised by BTG. For founders who said they did not want to "play with capital," the endgame has been the same: merger into a larger balance sheet.
