AlphaGrep launches hybrid long-short fund on India's new SIF platform

What's the deal? AlphaGrep Mutual FundDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has launched the Eminence Hybrid Long-Short Fund under its Specialised Investment Fund (SIF) platform. The new fund offer opens October 14 and closes October 28.

What's inside? The interval strategy combines equity long-short positions, special situations, options strategies, arbitrage, and fixed-income investments in a single portfolio. It also permits limited short exposure in equity and debt through derivatives, subject to the applicable framework.

What's the endgame? AlphaGrep says the strategy aims to generate returns from multiple opportunities rather than relying mainly on the direction of equity markets. It will be benchmarked against the Nifty 50 Hybrid Composite Debt 50:50 Index (TRI), with a suggested horizon of 12 months or longer.

The minimum investment is US$13.6K for regular investors and US$1.36K for accredited investors.

Who's behind it? Bhautik Ambani, chief executive officer of AlphaGrep Mutual Fund, said the strategy draws on the group's experience managing quantitative long-short strategies through its Category III Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) business.

What could go wrong? Returns depend on market conditions, individual strategy performance, and the fund manager's decisions. Such strategies carry risks from market movements, derivatives positions, and liquidity conditions.

The signal: SIFs are designed to offer more flexibility than conventional mutual fund schemes, including permitted derivatives and limited short exposure. The launch shows fund houses moving to bridge the gap between retail mutual funds and alternative strategies previously reserved for high-net-worth investors.
