Korea Investment Management launches US-Korea fund with built-in downside buffer
What's the deal? Korea Investment ManagementDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has launched the Korea Investment US-Korea Earnings Focus Fund, a public-offering fund-of-funds investing in blue-chip companies across South Korea and the US. Subscription runs through October 13 exclusively at Korea Investment & SecuritiesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, with the fund's establishment set for October 14.
How it's built: The fund spreads capital across seven underlying private equity funds — covering software, platforms, semiconductor materials and equipment, shipbuilding, AI semiconductors, onsite power, and financial services — each receiving roughly 14%.
The downside buffer: A tiered profit-loss structure sits at the fund's core. Subordinated investors absorb the first 15% of losses from underlying funds, so general investors only feel losses beyond that band.
The trade-off: Returns are split 85/15 between investors and the manager up to 10% cumulative gains, then 55/45 above that threshold. The maximum investment period is three years, with early redemption triggered at a 15% cumulative return.
Why now? The product targets an environment of heightened stock volatility and elevated interest rates, pairing principal protection with a focus on firms that generate steady profits. It screens for companies with proven free cash flow rather than chasing themes.
What could go wrong? As a performance-based product, principal losses can still occur. If losses in certain underlying funds are substantial, the public fund could face greater-than-expected losses even after the subordinated buffer.
In their words: "We rigorously selected companies that generate higher margins with the same capital and maintain financial soundness resilient to economic cycles, rather than those with mere top-line growth," said Hwang Woo-taek, head of the Global Equity Management Division and the fund's lead portfolio manager.
The signal: By wrapping private equity exposure in a public-offering shell with a loss-absorbing tranche, Korea Investment Management is pitching a middle path — retail access to blue-chip US and Korean names, with a cushion designed for jittery markets.
