AirMatrix wins NRC IRAP grant for AI airspace security platform

What's the deal? AirMatrixDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → is receiving funding and advisory services from the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → for a research project advancing AI-powered multi-sensor intelligence for low-altitude airspace security. The company said it is its largest NRC IRAPDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →-supported project to date. The grant comes through the program's Defence Industry Assist initiative.

What's the endgame? AirMatrix is building Libra, a hardware-agnostic command and control platform for low-altitude airspace awareness. The platform connects data from radar, radio-frequency detection, cameras, and other sensors into a single operational picture, without requiring operators to replace existing systems.

Why now? Defence, public safety, and critical infrastructure operators increasingly rely on multiple sensor systems that often run independently. That forces operators to switch between interfaces and manually work out whether separate detections relate to the same object.

The project will advance work in multi-sensor correlation, automated sensor cueing, AI-assisted visual confirmation, and detection-to-confirmation workflows. The aim is to speed operators from initial detection to an informed decision while keeping human oversight.

What they're saying: "The next generation of airspace security will not be defined by whoever deploys the most sensors. It will be defined by who can make those systems work together," said Bashir Khan, co-founder and chief executive officer of AirMatrix.

"No single sensor can provide the complete picture," Khan added. "The real opportunity is to combine their strengths and help the human operator understand what matters."

The signal: The grant reflects growing demand for software that ties together fragmented sensor networks rather than new hardware. As operators accumulate more detection systems, the value is shifting to the intelligence layer that turns scattered data into a single, actionable view.
