What's the deal? ITOCHU CorporationDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired a 20% stake in Aspirant GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Tokyo-based private equity fund manager, making it an equity-method affiliate. The deal value was not disclosed.

What does Aspirant do? Founded in 2012, the independent firm specialises in business succession and carve-out investments in Japanese companies. It has backed 28 companies and manages assets exceeding US$1.31B.

Why now? Japan faces a wave of business succession deals as owners age, alongside more carve-outs as large firms review their portfolios. ITOCHU says private equity's role in lifting corporate value is "becoming more important than ever."

What's the endgame? ITOCHU wants to pair Aspirant's investment expertise with its own industry knowledge and global network to generate new deals. It also plans to deploy its ITOCHU Digital Value Chain to help portfolio companies with digital transformation, including AI.

The two have worked together since Aspirant's founding, with ITOCHU investing in its funds and supporting portfolio companies.

The signal: The deal reflects how Japan's trading houses are deepening their push into private equity as succession and carve-out activity reshapes the domestic market. For ITOCHU, a minority stake offers exposure to that pipeline without taking full control.
