MassChallenge launches $2M fund to finance its own expansion

What's the deal? MassChallengeDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has launched the MC Innovation FundDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, seeded by a $2 million founding gift from Amy Boger, M.D., and Joshua Boger, Ph.D. The Boston-based accelerator unveiled the fund on October 8, 2026. Unlike a typical investment vehicle, the capital is earmarked for MassChallenge's own growth rather than startup equity.

Why now? The fund targets what Joshua Boger calls a "chicken and egg problem" — established organizations struggle to finance new ventures while committed to existing work. "It's very hard for organizations who are substantial to make another next move in growth of their mission," he said. "They can grow what they're doing bigger, but it's very hard for them to grow in mission."

What's the endgame? Over the next six years, the fund gives MassChallenge dedicated capital for new initiatives without touching existing programs or operating costs. It is also designed to grow, with hopes of drawing contributions from startup alumni and supporters.

Who's behind it? Joshua Boger has advised founders, set up governance, and served as a finals judge since the accelerator's founding. He framed the gift as repayment: "Alkeus wouldn't have existed without MassChallenge," he said, referring to his pharmaceutical company. "We thought it was past timeDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → that some companies who owe some or all of their success to MassChallenge think about paying back."

By the numbers: Founded in Boston in 2009, MassChallenge has backed over 5,000 startups that have collectively raised more than $27 billion. TIME and StatistaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → rank it the second-best startup accelerator in the US.

The signal: The gift positions MassChallenge as a nonprofit raising growth capital much like the startups it serves. CEO Cait Brumme called it part of a "broader multi-year, multi-million-dollar growth plan." The Bogers hope it sets a precedent — "our hope is that maybe we could inspire some other people to join us in this effort," Joshua Boger said.
