Monterro reinvests in Lumera via new M5 fund, extends ownership

What's the deal? MonterroDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has reinvested in Lumera, the Northern European Life and Pensions software provider, through its latest growth equity fund, M5. The firm's M4 and M5 funds together acquired all shares previously held by its M2 fund, keeping Monterro the majority owner. The fund size was not disclosed.

Why now? The reinvestment extends Monterro's ownership horizon nearly a decade after it first backed Lumera in 2017. Since then, Lumera has grown from roughly 100 to almost 600 employees, with revenue now topping US$145.1M, and expanded from Sweden into Norway, the Netherlands, and the UK.

What's the endgame? Lumera supplies core software to more than 250 clients, including eight of Sweden's 10 largest insurers, and manages over 20 million policies. Its next phase will use AI to speed client migrations and product development, strengthen its UK and Netherlands positions, and expand into new markets, partly through acquisitions.

What's driving demand? The shift from defined benefit to defined contribution pensions across Europe is pushing insurers to replace legacy systems. Pension reform in the Netherlands is accelerating that transition.

"Reinvesting through M5 gives us a longer horizon and fresh capital to support Lumera's next phase of growth," said Thomas Bill Revland, co-founder of Monterro and chairman of the board at Lumera.

The signal: Software buyout firms are increasingly rolling assets into newer funds rather than selling, giving them more runway to grow proven businesses. For Monterro, keeping Lumera signals conviction in insurtech as European insurers modernise core infrastructure.
