Civo plans 40 UK edge data centres to power sovereign AI inference
UK cloud provider Civo is building a national network of 40 liquid-cooled edge data centres, with a planned combined capacity of one gigawatt, aimed at running AI inference close to the organisations that use it rather than training models abroad.
What's the plan? The first site, in Hertfordshire, is being fitted out and will open at 8MW, rising to 38MW on the same plot. Five further locations totalling 150MW have been secured in Lancashire, Greater Manchester, London and Oxfordshire, with the remaining sites planned over the next three years. The Register reports the Hertfordshire site is due to open by March 2027 with Nvidia Vera Rubin systems. The one-gigawatt figure is a network target rather than committed capacity.
Why it matters: "Britain has the talent. What it needs is infrastructure to match it," said CEO Mark Boost. The plan, first announced on 22 September 2026, is drawing renewed attention as a rare example of UK-owned AI compute being built at scale, as Europe grapples with a shortage of domestic capacity.
