What do they do? Founded in Montreal in 2017, Neolegal uses legal technology and automation to widen access to justice, selling online legal packages to individuals and businesses, plus tools for law firms and employee benefits programs. Leya turns virtual legal support into a workplace benefit, known for instant booking of consultations with lawyers and notaries.

The rationale: Neolegal says the deal strengthens its position in the group insurance market. "Leya has built a strong position in the group insurance space, and its integration will help accelerate our growth in this strategic market," said chief executive officer Philip Hazeltine.

Why now? Employers are adding higher-value protections to benefits programs, and legal products are taking on a larger role alongside offerings like dental and mental health support.

Leya's founder framed the fit in similar terms. "I founded Leya with a simple conviction: legal support should be part of employee benefits just like dental care or mental health support," said Ryan Hillier.

The signal: The acquisition is part of a broader consolidation trend in Canada's legal technology platform market, as players move to reach a critical mass of users and position legal products as a standard workplace benefit.
