Valsoft buys Firebrand Group to build out publishing software portfolio

What's the deal? Valsoft has acquired Firebrand TechnologiesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, NetGalleyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and SupaduDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → — collectively the Firebrand Group — from Media Do InternationalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the US subsidiary of Japan's MEDIA DO. Financial terms were not disclosed.

What each company does: Firebrand, founded in 1987 in Newburyport, Massachusetts, makes software for managing publishing workflows and distributing book metadata. NetGalley connects publishers and authors with nearly 1 million book advocates and trade professionals. London-based Supadu provides publisher websites, e-commerce systems, and discovery tools.

What's the endgame? The three businesses give Montreal-based Valsoft exposure across the publishing process — from title management before publication to pre-release marketing, online discovery, and direct-to-reader sales. That spans multiple components of publishing technology rather than a single software category.

Who are the customers? The companies serve publishers ranging from the Big Five to independent, university, and religious presses, plus booksellers, librarians, educators, and reviewers.

What changes? Not much operationally. All three keep their existing brands, leadership teams, and employees while gaining access to Valsoft's resources and investment capabilities.

"Firebrand, NetGalley and Supadu are trusted names that publishers depend on every day," said Valsoft managing partner Anthony Caruso. "We're ecstatic to continue building and investing in the technology that helps a title from the moment it's created to the moment it reaches a reader."

The signal: The deal fits Valsoft's model of buying vertical market software businesses and holding them long term under decentralised operations. By combining title management, marketing, and sales tools, it assembles a portfolio spanning the full publishing workflow under one owner.
