The vehicle is developing a 500MW wind and solar project paired with battery storage in Karnataka's Bidar district. Terms were not disclosed.

What's the endgame? The project combines about 500MWp of solar and wind generation with a 200MWh battery energy storage system. For Sumitomo, the deal expands its renewable footprint in India and builds on its experience integrating multiple clean-energy sources with storage.

Why now? HFE framed the partnership as timed to India's next phase of energy transition, pairing foreign capital with local execution.

"As India enters the next phase of its energy transition, partnerships such as the one with Sumitomo will play a critical role in bringing together capital and execution excellence to accelerate all-round adoption of clean energy," said HFE founder and chairman Rahul Munjal.

What they're saying: "Through this partnership, Sumitomo Corporation will strengthen our renewable energy business platform in India while pursuing new business opportunities that support the stable supply of renewable energy," said Jun Minase, general manager of Sumitomo's Overseas Energy Solution Strategic Business Unit.

The signal: Battery storage is becoming the price of entry for serious renewable projects, as developers move from intermittent wind and solar toward firm, round-the-clock supply. Sumitomo's bet underlines growing Japanese appetite for India's clean-energy build-out — and the capital-plus-execution model now shaping the market.
