Microsoft slashes internal Claude spending by a third as Meta halves staff using it
Meta and Microsoft, two of Anthropic’s biggest corporate customers, are working to cut their employees’ use of Claude, according to The Information. Microsoft has lowered its internal Claude spending projections by a third, and Meta has cut the number of employees using Claude by half.
The numbers The Information’s Aaron Holmes reported that Microsoft’s internal spend with Anthropic was running at about $1bn annualised earlier this year and is now down by more than a third, while Meta has cut Claude Code seats from 60,000 to 30,000. In Microsoft’s case, lower internal spending has been offset by higher Claude use from its customers, so its total spend with Anthropic is roughly flat.
Why it matters Because both companies rank among Anthropic’s largest corporate buyers, the pullback is a challenge for its efforts to sustain its explosive growth. The Information’s Jessica Lessin said investors were asking for even more detail on the story the morning it broke.
