Sendcloud buys Sendy to lock in smaller webshops
What's the deal? Dutch shipping platform Sendcloud has acquired fellow Netherlands-based Sendy, which simplifies logistics for startups and smaller webshops. Financial terms were not disclosed.
What's the endgame? Sendy has built its position by making shipping technology and daily logistics as accessible as possible for early-stage e-commerce businesses. Sendcloud brings a broader European carrier network and more advanced software for complex processes, including automated checkout, tracking, returns, and international expansion.
Why now? Sendcloud wants to strengthen its hold on the lower end of the market without overcomplicating its own platform. "Sendy filled a specific need," said Sendcloud chief Bas Smeulders, who sees the startup's ease-of-use expertise as a guard against feature bloat.
What changes for customers? Sendy's existing users will eventually gain access to Sendcloud's wider network and international capabilities. The aim is that growing webshops won't need to switch systems as their shipping volume and complexity rise.
Both platforms' technology and products will keep being developed. Sendcloud says it will keep investing in Sendy's simple entry-level model while strengthening the link to its broader infrastructure in the background.
Sendy director Rens Maassen said combining Sendy's ease of use with Sendcloud's scale and capacity opens "new growth opportunities" for connected e-commerce businesses.
The signal: Shipping-software consolidation is moving down-market, as platforms chase the full customer lifecycle — from first parcel to cross-border scale — rather than winning merchants only once they grow large.
