Init buys majority of Norway's Applied Autonomy to enter autonomous fleet market

What's the deal? Init Innovation in Traffic SystemsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired a 67.74% stake in Applied AutonomyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Norwegian startup founded in 2017. The deal value was undisclosed. It gives InitDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → a foothold in managing autonomous vehicle fleets across public transport, airports, and logistics.

What's the endgame? Applied Autonomy's xFlow platform, which supports mixed fleets of autonomous and conventional vehicles, is the central asset. The startup already runs the only autonomous bus in Europe operating on a regular route without a safety driver, in Stavanger, Norway.

Why now? The acquisition targets a growing driver shortage. In Germany alone, more than 20,000 bus drivers are needed.

In Germany, Init leads the BRAVE10k project, which aims to integrate 10,000 autonomous vehicles into public transport by 2030. The project is building a framework for deploying autonomous fleets, tied to sustainability goals.

The signal: By buying a majority stake rather than building in-house, Init is betting that proven autonomous operations — like Stavanger's driverless route — can scale across Europe as labour gaps widen. The move positions it to supply the technology backbone for a shift public transport operators appear unable to staff their way through.
