Waste-to-water pioneer Janicki Bioenergy lands $500M from Ara Partners
What's the deal? Janicki BioenergyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the Seattle company whose Omniprocessor turns human sewage into drinking water and electricity, has raised $500 million in a growth equity round led by Ara PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The company earns nearly $100 million a year.
What's the endgame? Janicki built the Omniprocessor to tackle two problems at once: inadequate sanitation and limited access to clean water and energy. The system heats sewage to separate water from dry waste, then burns the solids to drive a steam generator.
Why now? The technology drew attention in 2015, when the Bill & Melinda Gates FoundationDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → backed its development and Gates was filmed drinking water processed from waste. A decade on, the system can process up to 14 tonnes of waste daily, and the company has moved from prototype to a revenue-generating business.
By the numbers: The S100 unit can handle about 12.3m³ of sewage sludge at peak, producing roughly 10,800 litres of clean drinking water and 150 kilowatts of electricity. The leftover ash is non-toxic and rich in phosphorus and potassium, making it usable as fertiliser.
The signal: At $500 million, the raise sits in the top 10% of all-time growth equity rounds for US energy companies, across a sample of 356 deals. It marks a shift for waste-to-resource technology — from philanthropic experiment to a thesis that commercial growth investors are now willing to fund at scale.
