Microsoft opens Majorana quantum chips to DARPA for independent testing

What's the deal? Microsoft has made its Majorana-based topological quantum hardware available for hands-on, independent testing by DARPA at a new quantum research center in Maryland, alongside the University of Maryland and industry partners. DARPA’s evaluation is part of its Quantum Benchmarking Initiative / US2QC work to verify whether proposed architectures can scale to useful, cost-effective machines.

Context Microsoft’s Majorana topological-qubit claims have been controversial in the research community — prior papers were retracted and critics say published data have not fully substantiated the noise-protected Majorana mode story. Moving from remote evaluation to on-site DARPA access in Maryland is a material step in the external validation process. Sabine Hossenfelder highlighted the independent-testing angle on 3 Oct 2026.
