Space startup Foundational exits stealth with £8.2M to scale laser-based satellite tracking

Try Dealroom → has emerged from stealth with £8.2 million in pre-seed funding to expand its satellite positioning infrastructure and develop its data platform. What's the endgame? Founded in 2025 by Hira Virdee and Dave Gooding, Foundational is automating and scaling Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), a method that fires laser pulses from a ground station at a retroreflector on a satellite and measures the light's return time to fix position with millimetre precision.

The company combines satellite-mounted retroreflectors, automated ground-based laser stations, and a software platform into a vertically integrated system — aiming to turn SLR into a scalable commercial service.

Why now? As satellites and debris crowd low Earth orbit, operators need more precise data on object locations and trajectories. SLR data can support space traffic control, resilient navigation, and Earth observation.

The technology builds on laser-ranging systems developed at Lumi SpaceDealroom has a profile for this one. Its customers and partners include low Earth orbit constellation operators, the European Space Agency, UK government departments, aerospace manufacturers, and research institutes.

SLR "is one of the most precise measurement tools humanity has built, capable of pinpointing a satellite to within millimetres, but until now it's been too costly and too complex to use at scale," said Virdee, chief executive officer and co-founder. "We're rebuilding a critical layer of space infrastructure for the commercial era."

The funding will expand Foundational's ground-station network, vertically integrate the manufacturing of its space-based hardware, increase retroreflector production, and develop its data platform. It ultimately plans to build a global network supplying positioning data to satellite operators, insurers, and governments.

The signal: With orbits filling up fast, precise tracking is becoming infrastructure — and investors are betting that commercialising a long-proven scientific tool can meet rising demand.
