Yamaguchi Financial launches $63.5M fund for regional companies

What's the deal? Japan's Yamaguchi Financial GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (YMFG) has established the YMFG Do-shu Kyomei Fund, an investment vehicle of up to US$76.9M targeting regional companies. The group announced the fund on October 2 to mark its 20th anniversary.

What's the endgame? The fund takes equity stakes rather than lending, supporting companies from business concept through execution and corporate value enhancement. "We aim to go beyond lending and build relationships where we grow together with investee companies as stakeholders," president Keisuke Mukunashi said at a press conference in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. He framed the anniversary as a shift from an organisation that waits for consultations to one that proactively proposes and acts.

Why now? YMFG was formed in 2006 through the integration of Yamaguchi BankDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Momiji Holdings, and now operates three banks. Alongside the fund, it launched a special-rate time deposit campaign the same day, seeking a combined US$846.2M.

The deposits offer 2.0% annually for three-year terms and 2.2% for five-year terms, split across US$384.6M at Yamaguchi Bank and US$230.8M each at Momiji BankDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Kitakyushu BankDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The push comes amid intensifying competition for deposits from online banks.

The signal: Mukunashi played down scale, saying the group's earlier target of US$153.8B in total assets is "not the goal" — the aim is corporate value, profitability, and capital efficiency. For a regional lender, equity investment marks a bet that growing with local businesses, not just funding them, is the path forward.
