Surmodics buys Alta Biomed to boost blood-compatible coating technology
What's the deal? SurmodicsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a US supplier of surface technologies and coatings for medical devices, has acquired Alta Biomed for an undisclosed sum. Alta Biomed, based in Carlsbad, California, provides coating and testing services for vascular and other medical devices. The deal was announced in October 2026.
What's the endgame? The acquisition adds Alta Biomed's proprietary PzF thin-film surface technology to Surmodics' portfolio of blood- and tissue-compatible coatings. The company positions PzF as an antithrombotic, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing option for its existing lineup.
PzF uses ultra-thin polymer films to improve the blood compatibility of devices that touch blood and tissue. With more than 20 years of use in medical devices, the technology has six FDA clearances and one premarket approval, and is used commercially in cardiovascular and embolisation products.
What changes? The deal also expands Surmodics' analytical testing capabilities. Alta Biomed's Carlsbad site brings expertise in blood compatibility and particulate testing, including coating-integrity assessment and dynamic tests in circulatory systems using human blood.
PzF can be applied to metals, polymers, and medical fabrics, with uses spanning stents, grafts, catheters, filters, and nitinol products.
Why now? Surmodics ties the move to rising complexity in device design. "As medical device innovation advances in neuromodulation, brain-computer interfaces, neurovascular, structural heart, and venous and arterial technologies, engineers and scientists need a broader range of surface technology options," said Charlie Olson, president of Surmodics Coatings, Biomaterials and Catheter Technologies (translated from German).
The signal: The acquisition reflects continued consolidation among medical device coating specialists, as suppliers broaden their technology stacks to serve increasingly complex blood-contact applications.
