Who's who? BTG Pactual is the sixth-largest bank in Brazil by shareholders' equity and a pioneer in the country's climate finance market, lending to clients from SMEs to large corporations. COFIDES provides medium- and long-term financing for private-sector projects, often involving Spanish companies operating internationally.
What's the money for? The facility gives BTG an additional source of long-term funding diversification to back projects with positive environmental and social outcomes. "This facility will support the continued growth of BTG's sustainable finance activities," said Sajeev Chakkalakal, EMGA's head of investment banking.
Why now? EMGA framed the deal as a show of resilience against "a challenging global macroeconomic backdrop, ongoing market volatility, and periods of heightened uncertainty across emerging markets," per Chakkalakal.
By the numbers: EMGA says it has facilitated nearly $2 billion of investment into Brazil to date and closed more than $11 billion of debt and private equity transactions across emerging and frontier markets. The firm, which has offices in London and New York, calls Brazil one of its core markets.
The signal: The deal reflects how development finance institutions are channelling capital into emerging-market banks to fund climate and impact projects — with established lenders like BTG serving as the conduit for international money into Brazil.
