Astranis lands $470 million loan to scale US satellite production
What's the deal? Astranis has secured US$302.8M loan from the Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → to expand domestic production of its satellites. The San Francisco-based company builds small geostationary satellites that orbit in tandem with Earth's rotation to provide broad coverage. EXIM approved the credit facility last week to grow "Astranis' capacity to manufacture and operate satellites," the bank said.
Why now? Astranis has a backlog of more than $1 billion in commercial contracts, with customers in Oman, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, and Thailand. The company currently has five satellites in orbit and needs more funding to meet rising international demand for sovereign satellite capabilities.
What's the endgame? The financing supports the buildout of more satellites to serve that backlog, expanding both US and overseas capacity.
Zoom out: The loan comes through EXIM's national security-focused Make More in America Initiative. Recent EXIM aerospace investments include Beta Technologies and CesiumAstro. "In order to lead across the globe, America must lead in space," EXIM chairman John Jovanovic said.
The signal: At $468 million, the loan ranks in the top 2% of all-time debt rounds for US deep tech companies, out of nearly 2,000 comparable deals. It marks a growing appetite for government-backed financing to keep advanced manufacturing — and the space race — on American soil.
