Lightspeed targets $250M for AI-focused India fund

What's the deal? Lightspeed Venture Partners is raising $250 million for Lightspeed India Partners V, an early-stage fund focused exclusively on artificial intelligence startups across India and Southeast Asia. The firm has secured commitments for 80% of the target, according to a confidential investor letter obtained by TechCrunch.

Why now? Lightspeed is betting AI will generate more value in India than the internet did — a marked shift from its historically broad, multi-sector early-stage approach in the region. It follows a US regulatory filing in late April that disclosed the fund without naming a target size.

What's the endgame? The fund also aligns Lightspeed's India cycle with its global fundraising for the first time, signalling a more integrated "one Lightspeed" strategy. At $250 million, it is half the size of its $500 million predecessor, allowing a sharper focus on individual deals and a shorter investment period.

In India, Lightspeed has already backed Sarvam AI, one of the country's earliest large language model developers, which was selected by the Indian government to help build sovereign AI models. Its global portfolio includes Anthropic, xAI, and Databricks.

What could go wrong? India has yet to produce a major frontier AI model developer and has drawn less core AI research funding than the US and China. Investors are instead eyeing the application layer, where India's large pool of software developers offers an edge.

The signal: Lightspeed's smaller, AI-only fund reflects a broader move by global venture firms to concentrate capital around a single thesis rather than spread it thin. It positions India less as a frontier-model contender and more as a place to scale AI-powered software.
