Noble Carbon's smart breakers make EV charger installs painless
What's the deal? Noble CarbonDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →,a Pittsfield, Massachusetts startup, has developed smart circuit breakers that fit into existing slots in a home's electrical panel and adjust how much electricity they deliver to devices like EV chargers, heat pumps and induction stoves in real time. The company says installation takes less than five minutes and avoids the main-panel upgrades that can more than double charger installation costs. It is one of 200 startups in this year's TechCrunch Startup Battlefield at Disrupt in San Francisco in October.
Why it matters: Home electrical panels are designed for absolute peak usage, which may occur only a handful of hours per year. By turning down power to the three to six largest loads, Noble Carbon's breakers can keep the whole house within panel capacity without ripping out the existing panel. That removes one of the biggest cost barriers to electrification, for EV charging and for heat pumps and induction stoves alike. The product is undergoing evaluation for UL certification,a widely recognized electrical safety standard.
Who's behind it: Co-founder and CEO Jared LebosDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → was inspired after experiencing rolling blackouts in his home country of South Africa; he worked with co-founder and CTO Andrew CraneDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → to build the product. Some employees have been testing the breakers in their homes for more than a year.
Signal: The company is partnering with the utility EversourceDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → to install its breakers in up to 200 multifamily units in Massachusetts. Trust from a major utility, plus a Startup Battlefield slot, suggests the product has moved past prototype into real deployments, with UL certification as the next gate before broader commercial rollout.
