Huawei fast-tracks Ascend 960DT AI chip to Q1 2027 in Nvidia challenge
What's the deal? HuaweiDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → is moving up the launch of its next-generation Ascend 960DT AI chip to the first quarter of 2027, the company said on Thursday at its Huawei Connect conference. It had previously planned a Q3 2027 launch, a spokesperson told TechCrunch. The chip is central to the Chinese firm's effort to challenge Nvidia.
Why now? "The Ascend 960DT is expected to be ready in Q1 2027. Ascend 960 chips are launching ahead of schedule, doubling performance and advancing year by year," the spokesperson said. Rotating and acting chairman David Wang announced the updated timeline. The move lands a week before US President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping meet on September 24 in Washington, DC.
What's the endgame? Huawei wants to turn hundreds of thousands, and eventually millions, of AI chips into one giant computer. It calls the approach its Peerium Computing Architecture, which relies on UnifiedBus to link processors with memory, storage, and networking hardware. Rotating chairman Eric Xu said the architecture is designed to build larger systems for both training and inference.
The Atlas 950 SuperPoD and SuperCluster are the first systems based on it. Huawei says an Atlas 950 SuperCluster can connect up to 256,000 accelerator cards.
What could go wrong? The accelerated timeline raises questions about the broader systems. China tech analyst Rui Ma noted on X that Huawei had said its Atlas 960 SuperPoD would scale to 15,488 Ascend 960 chips, while this week's announcement referred to a system with 4,096 chips. "The chip itself is coming WAY earlier, but the SuperPoD they announced is much smaller than what they originally laid out," Ma wrote.
Huawei has advanced its chip ambitions despite US restrictions on China's access to advanced semiconductor technology. Ma argued those limits are unlikely to work: "I think it's futile to stop China's development in semiconductors because the stakes for self-sufficiency are just too high at this point."
The signal: The race is now geopolitical. Trump has resisted calls to slow AI development, arguing the US must stay ahead of China. Xu, meanwhile, said Chinese companies need to accelerate to catch up, according to the Financial Times.
