Neuberger raises $460M for its first Japan-only private equity fund

What's the deal? Neuberger BermanDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised about US$538.5M for the NB Japan Private Equity Opportunities Fund, its first vehicle dedicated exclusively to Japanese private equity. The capital came from institutional investors, family offices, and private wealth investors.

How it works: The fund invests through a mix of commitments to Japanese private equity funds and direct co-investments. Neuberger says that gives investors diversified exposure while improving capital deployment efficiency.

Why now? Corporate governance reforms have pushed Japanese companies to prioritise shareholder returns, feeding a pipeline of carve-outs and take-private deals. Demographic change is also driving ownership transitions at founder-led companies.

The firm completed the raise in under a year, despite what it called a challenging fundraising environment, according to Jonathan Shofet, managing director and head of private investment portfolios and co-investments.

The context: Neuberger is not new to the market. It has previously committed more than US$846.2M across Japan-focused primary funds, co-investments, and secondaries through commingled funds and custom accounts, but this is its first fund built solely for the country.

What's the endgame? The fund draws on Neuberger's private markets platform, which manages more than $170 billion in investor commitments across primaries, co-investments, secondaries, private credit, and specialty strategies. A Tokyo-based team supports the strategy.

"Japan represents one of the most compelling private equity markets globally," Kent Chen, managing director and head of Asia private equity, said in a statement.

The signal: Japan's buyout market is drawing sustained interest from global managers as reforms open up deal flow. Neuberger, which oversees about $613 billion in total assets as of June 30, 2026, is betting a dedicated vehicle can capture that momentum.
