Applied Materials commits $5B to India as chip-gear firms expand

What's the deal? Applied Materials announced a $5 billion investment in India over the next decade, while Lam Research plans to spend about US$1.36B on its first silicon component manufacturing facility in the country. Both firms unveiled the plans at SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi.

What's the endgame? Applied Materials framed the spending as its "India Vision 2035," focusing on research and development, the domestic semiconductor ecosystem, and future talent. Its plans include a 140-acre semiconductor research park combining cleanroom capabilities and collaborative R&D with customers and suppliers.

What changes? Applied Materials also aims to grow its India-based supply-chain capacity tenfold by 2035, opening opportunities for local suppliers and drawing global ones. "Inventions done here must scale globally," said Prabhu Raja, president of the company's Semiconductor Products Group.

Why now? Lam Research chief operating officer Sesha Varadarajan called this a "very critical moment" for the industry, driven by artificial intelligence fuelling fresh demand and innovation.

The signal: The dual announcements point to global chip-equipment makers deepening their footprint in India as it courts a bigger role in the semiconductor value chain. ASML HoldingDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → executive vice president Wayne Allan added that India's opportunity "extends beyond chip manufacturing," and that under the right conditions the country "will become increasingly important globally."
